Anorak Hour Nr 349 b/c 2nd March 2003 Following up last week's news report about CB Mass Broadcasts in the North, the first item this week looks at the rise in popularity of CB Radio in the 70s & 80s.
Also following on from last week's programme which featured news reports on the closure of Laser 558 in November 1985, this item was taken from South East Sound's Pirate news of the following week. Next, a programme that was the inspiration for The Anorak Hour. A clip from SouthSide Radio's Free Radio Campaign programme from 1979. On a similar theme, Captain Eamon Cooke reports on new test transmissions from Radio Sunshine back in 1980, and then there's an update on Big D's news. Next, there's a profile of Ian Dempsey which looks at his radio career over 25 years. The item includes an interview in which Ian talks about his time on the early pirates. The sudden closure of Century Radio in 1991 - and in particular how RTÉ reported it - is the next feature on the show. Next we travel back in time to Halloween 1979 with the Hot Press Rock Show on Radio Dublin. Leave the rain and the wind behind and take a trip to Hawaii with the next feature: airchecks from KPOI FM. Then, Radio Nova's spin-off Exidy 738AM from 1983 is featured with Tony Allan on test. This week's final recording is in the form of test transmissions from 90s Dublin dance station Vibe FM. This is followed by extracts from Tony Fenton's final programme for 2FM which went out a few days ago. Next, in a specially-recoded feature, George Long takes a lookback at Q102 - the 80s Dublin superpirate. Then, from 1994, there's a recording of John Deal (now John Walsh on FM104) on air on Spectrum 105FM Next we go back in time to the early 80s with Radio 257, and a few featured voices. Finally from the archives, the infamous 1984 jamming of Sunshine Radio by RTÉ is featured. To finish the show, Pete Reed presents this week's news - which includes an up-to-date pirate bandscan for the Dublin area. Anorak Hour Nr 352 b/c 23rd March 2003 17 years ago this week, Dublin witnessed the end of an era when Radio Nova closed down locally for good. To start this week's show, there are some extracts from the final few minutes of the station.
Next we stay Nova-related with a detailed look at the associated companies of Nova Media Services Ltd. From 1989 on RTÉ Radio 1, media lecturer Colm Kenny comments on the short-listed applicants for the country's first independent national licence. One of them was Chris Cary's Radio Nova. Then, Atlantic 252 is featured with Henry Owens, Dusty Rhodes & Mark Byrnes on air promoting an anti-smoking campaign. Next, from 1988 there's a feature on CRF - Community Radio Fingal, one of the few remaining true community services at that time. Finally in the archives section, Lite FM's first day on air in May 2000 is sampled with output from Liam Quigley & Mike Moloney. To finish the show, Pete Reed looks at this week's radio news. Then from the mid '70s, there's an airing for some of the famous voices on BBC Radio 1. From January 2000, Conor G on air for Dublin dance music station Essential Galaxy is next on the programme. Then, Mark Byrne's return to 98FM in October 1998 is featured. Long-term '90s Dublin pirate ABC 94FM is on the programme next, with Paul Lee on air. Next, from March 1988, there's a sample of Kieran Murray on air with '80s Dublin city centre pirate Liberty 104.
