DECEMBER 2002
Anorak Hour Nr 336 b/c 1st December 2002

Marty Whelan's sign-off on his return to RTÉ in 1997 is featured first on this week's show.
Next, one of the voices of the 80s Irish superpirate era George Long recalls some Nova memories.
Then there's an always welcome outing for the 'RTÉ Jam Rap' - recorded by Colm Hayes for Nova in 1982 during the time of the state service's jamming of the pirate station.
Continuing the Nova theme, some of its famous voices can be heard in the next section.
Q102, another of the 80s superpirates, ran a series of car stickers featuring 'Stickerman'. They are sampled here.
Where is he now? Jim O'Neill is featured from Summer 2000 on Today FM in the final recording in the archive section.
Then Pete Reed presents this week's news.

Anorak Hour Nr 337 b/c 8th December 2002

First archive recording this week is the second short programme from George Long. This one looks at Energy 103.

Last Tuesday RTÉ Radio 1's Joe Duffy Show was given over to the controversy surrounding Radio Kilkenny's loss of licence to KCLR - The Heart of the Two Counties. Sampled here are some of the contributions from people directly involved.

Next, K.I.C. FM - one of the most powerful Dublin pirate stations of this millenium so far - was brought to its knees by the ODTR in the summer 0f 2001. The station was forced off the air following a raid on their mountain site, but using a makeshift aerial setup from their city centre location, they were back on air within a week. This recording samples the first live output from their return.

As usual, Pete Reed finishes the show with a look at this week's news.

Anorak Hour Nr 338 b/c 15th December 2002

First this week is a quick listener's request - Eamon Dunphy's final moments on Today FM's 'The Last Word'.

More studio airchecks from Atlantic 252 are aired next featuring many of the voices which made the long wave station so popular.

From 1996, broadcasting on 105. (em) (err) ...4, Phantom's forerunner Coast FM is featured next with Jack Hyland on air from the station's luxurious studios in Ballybrack.

Next, the show takes us back to the superpirate era with Q102 and an early recording of Dave Kelly on air. There's also an airing for the opening moments of the station from 1985.

Next, from 96FM in Cork, there's a recording of Ezeke from January this year - a very unique presenter...

This is followed by a unique recording of a Dublin bandscan from 1981.

Wish you were there? MOR FM in New Zealand do their utmost to make us Irish listeners jealous with this week's final archive item.

As usual, Pete Reed finishes the show with a look at this week's news.

Anorak Hour Nr 339 b/c 22nd December 2002

Christmas on the radio through the years is the theme of this week's Anorak Hour, which starts with a clip of Tommy Green on his first day on Radio Dublin from 20th December 1979. These days Tommy is with Lite Fm and he's also sampled with his Saturday night 'Soundtrack of the '70s' show.

From Christmas Eve 1985, Dave Kelly is featured next on Q102. Gary Hamill reads the news.

Sunshine Radio, with Paul Kavanagh on air on 19th December 1983, is next, quickly followed by Mike Doyle on Radio Annabelle from Christmas Eve of the same year.

Irish radio was never to be the same again. Gay Byrne's final show for RTÉ Radio 1 aired on Christmas Eve 1998. It is extensively featured next.

From St Stephen's Day 1997, Philip Cawley on Radio Ireland, which was renamed Today FM shortly afterwards, is the next archive recording.

Finally, Dundalk station Radio Carousel's Christmas Party from the mid-80s.

Pete Reed then presents the week's news.

Anorak Hour Nr 340 b/c 29th December 2002

The last Anorak Hour of 2002 features some output from local stations on Christmas Day this year. Starting with Ruth Scott on RTÉ's 2FM; then Enda Caldwell & Ian Dempsey on national station Today FM; and also Sean Ashmore on air on Wicklow's East Coast FM.
Very few pirate stations had live programming on the day. Two notable exceptions were Freedom 92FM & Phantom FM, which featured a marathon broadcast from Steve Conway.

The world's last offshore pirate, Arutz-7, is featured next with a short recording from October 1999. This is followed by a feature on the Voice of Peace, the former Mediterranean-based political offshore pirate.

The legendary Jimmy Young has retired from BBC Radio. The next feature looks at his long and illustrious UK radio career.

Finally in the archives section, a look-back through the years at Phantom FM.

As usual, to finish the show, Pete Reed looks at this week's news.
